The Arthritis Foundation provides a life-changing adventure experience for children facing the pain, disability and chronic fatigue of JA and other childhood rheumatic diseases. Offered for a nominal fee for the entire family, children and their siblings learn to overcome obstacles as they grow in their confidence and capabilities. Recreational programs are offered in a supportive, nurturing, and fully-accessible environment where activities are adapted specifically to the needs of the campers. Best of all, children living with juvenile arthritis make lifelong friends with other children who are facing the same challenges of growing up with arthritis.
For 30 years, the Arthritis Foundation Missouri/Southern Illinois region has hosted such a day. For many young people, the day changes their life, not just for a week, but for a lifetime. The Arthritis Foundation gives children with arthritis this same opportunity. The day focuses on what children can do, not what they can’t do. Children learn from others who have similar conditions and experiences. The program is designed to increase campers’ self-esteem by creating opportunities for them to meet personal challenges. The day offers traditional camp-like activities, such as campfires, singing, arts and crafts, and nature walks.
Arthritis Foundation Family Fun Days provide a safe and secure camping experience for children and teens with JA and childhood rheumatic diseases. Children gain a greater understanding of their own diagnosis and treatment, develop peer-to-peer support, increase independence and self-confidence, discover new skills and interests, and develop the skills they need to be leaders, advocates and champions in their everyday lives.
The Arthritis Foundation is the Champion of Yes. Leading the fight for the arthritis community, the Arthritis Foundation helps conquer everyday battles through life-changing information and resources, access to optimal care, advancements in science and community connections.
